Changes include bringing back warrant officers.
U.S. Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall recently announced significant changes to the Air Force and Space Force, reintroducing the warrant officer position and restructuring training and organizational names.
Warrant officers were discontinued by the Air Force 65 years ago, and the USAF secretary said bringing back the position creates more space for airmen who want to “code for their country.” Two dozen changes total were made to the two agencies, which often work together on assignments.
These transitions were made in light of military decisions being made by China. The United States has become increasingly aware of strategies that China has developed to counter U.S. military tactics in the Indo-Pacific region. Secretary Kendall stressed the importance of matching those developments as swiftly as possible.
“We are out of time,” Secretary Kendall said. “For at least two decades, China has been building a military that is designed, purpose-built, to deter and defeat the United States if we intervene in the western Pacific.”
